Organising Your Work Schedule in Australia

Have you just received your student visa to study in Australia? Congratulations! All international students living in Australia and their dependent family members have the right to work up to 40 hours per fortnight (two weeks) as soon as classes start. This means you can earn an income while studying to maintain your financial costs and lifestyle. However, calculating the 40 hours per week can be quite confusing and if done incorrectly, you may face problems with the law.

Here is a practical example. You are planning your work schedule for next month and you are thinking of working the following hours:
Week 1: 10 hours
Week 2: 30 hours
Week 3: 30 hours
Week 4: 10 hours

Looking at the hours worked between weeks 1 and 2, and 3 and 4 it all comes to a total of 40 hours, so you are within the legal number of hours over this 14 day period, thus no breach. However, if you look at the hours worked between weeks 2 and 3, the total hours worked equals 60 hours over this 14 day period and that means you have breached the 40 hour maximum. This breach can greatly affect your stay in Australia, even potentially resulting in the cancellation of your visa.

In order to avoid breaching the above terms of 40 hours per week, always review your working schedule and make sure that over all weeks within a fortnightly period the total hours equate to a maximum of 40 hours. So just to be safe, it’s a good idea to never work more than 20 hours in any given week. Doing so will enable you to earn enough money to live, without breaching the terms of your visa.

Here is another practical example. You are planning your work schedule for next month and you are thinking of working the following hours:
Week 1: 20 hours
Week 2: 20 hours
Week 3: 20 hours
Week 4: 20 hours

Or even...
Week 1: 10 hours
Week 2: 20 hours
Week 3: 20 hours
Week 4: 15 hours

The above examples are a great way to organise your schedule as no matter what weeks you look at, the total number of hours worked over a 14 day period is always below 40 hours. Remember, you can work as many hours as you wish during your holiday periods. Make use of this time off study to earn some extra cash!

So when you do land a job in Australia, always remember to be on top of the hours and above all enjoy your time both studying and working here!
